Farming

The Aztecs were very creative when it comes to farming. As you read on the Geography page, the Aztecs had awesome land for farming, but not alot of it since they were actually living on that land. So they decided to build chinampas, or floating gardens in the lake.

A drawing of the chinampas that the Aztec farmed on.

How did the Aztec make chinampas?

Well, basically they wove a net of grass, thick enough to hold things on top, but with small holes for the plant to get water from the lake, and ug out soil from out of the lake to fill into the woven net.

Why out of the lake you ask? This is because the soil that was in the lake had never been used. How could it? it was underwater this whole time. That means that the soil that was in the land is extremely fertile.

Actually, the soil that was on the chinampas made up to seven crops per year when the crops on the island made only about 3 at the most per year.

Here is a video to show you what i mean.
